Getting to Know the Gemini

Whether you want to get to know a friend better or you want to know yourself better, there’s no harm in learning about zodiac signs and how they can influence our lives. One of the most beloved zodiac signs is Gemini, also known as “The Twins”. If you are born between the dates of May 20th and June 21st, then congratulations because you fall under this sign.

This may leave you with questions about what this means. First things first, you will want to get a solid grasp on the history of this sign as well as common characteristics. You will then want to get a sense of who your sign is compatible with, sign-based strengths and weaknesses, and ways that you can start adjusting your live to benefit you based on your zodiac sign according to what horoscopes can tell you.

The Mythological Origins

The name of this sign is the Latin word for “twins” and as such, it is represented by the twins Castor and Pollux of Greek and Roman mythos. These twins, when referring to both, are known as Dioscuri. However, many people do not realize that the roots of these “twins” run far deeper than Greek mythology.

In Babylonian astronomy, there were two stars named Pollux and Castor. They represented the names “Lugal-irra” and “Meslamta-ea”, which meant “The Mighty King” and “The One who has Arisen from the Underworld” respectively, referring to the Babylonian god Nergal. Nergal was a major god who oversaw plague, pestilence, and was considered the ruler of the underworld. The twins were considered to be the guardians of doorways and would commonly be envisioned at the gates of the underworld.

The mythology behind the Greek stories are a little bit different. Instead of serving Nergal and guarding the gates to the underworld, Pollux and Castor were twins born from the same mother despite having different fathers. Castor was a mortal whose father was Tyndareus, the king of Sparta. Pollux was a divine son of Zeus. One day Pollux asked his father, Zeus, if he could share his own divine powers with his brother so that they could stay together. Zeus subsequently turned them into the constellation with the same name and can still be seen in the sky today.

Gemini's Specifics

As a zodiac sign, it is the third sign on the calendar, overseeing the dates of May 21st to June 20th. It is associated with the element of air, the day of Wednesday, and is considered to have the mutable quality. This means that people born under this sign take joy and comfort in changes, whether it be the change of the season or a new routine and have been known to sense when changes are on the horizon. Gemini’s ruling planet is Mercury. Its associated colors are light green and yellow.

Gemini's Traits

This sign embodies the spirit of being curious, expressive, and quick-witted. People under this sign seem to have two different personalities and it can be hard to know which side you may meet on any given day. A good example of this is the fact that they tend to be sociable and happy to carry on light-hearted conversations, but the next moment they may turn to a more serious mood and become restless and dissatisfied with their current environment. Although both sides may clash, they all have a desire for knowledge that cannot be sated, always excited to learn about the world and how it works.

People who are born under this sign will come across as creatives, free spirits, and always on the move from one project to the next. They often seek out friends as they feel something missing when they are alone. Many people born under this sign go into careers with a creative focus or may choose a research-oriented path. Others may choose to take on teaching roles, able to spread the knowledge they have collected while always facing something new each day.

Gemini's Strengths

Now that you have a good sense of what makes up Gemini’s mindset, you can begin to look at what areas they tend to excel in. They are often very affectionate people, considering their drive to always find that missing half. They are gentle, curious people who often have a childlike innocence about them. When finding a topic that they enjoy learning about, they will be able to learn more quickly than other signs and have an easier time communicating ideas that they come up with. And, always craving a change in life, they can adapt very easily to new and unknown situations.

Gemini's Weaknesses

Everyone has areas where they can fall a little bit short, and these people are not immune. Their gentle, free-spirit, and innocent disposition puts them at risk of being somewhat nervous about the world around them, as they may not know when the next change is coming or when they will get a chance to fulfil their desires to learn. They can be inconsistent, especially on days where it seems the other twin has taken over, meaning that you can never quite predict what one will do. This also leads them to being fairly indecisive, often needing someone to give them a final push toward a decision.

Gemini's Compatibility

As with all zodiac signs, there are some signs who get along with certain ones better than others. If you want to make sure friendships have the chance to last, you will want to make sure that their signs are compatible with your own. This sign is often the most compatible with fellow air signs, which are Aquarius and Libra. Fire signs often have the energy to keep up with your everchanging pace, meaning that Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius will mesh well. This sign is capable of getting along with water signs, which are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces, but only in small doses. Water signs can offer the emotional connection and nurturing that you need, but are often too calm and do not have the same penchant for movement and energy as you do.
